Janet Cooper
On this show textile artist Janet Cooper talks about the art of bricolage. Cooper shares her respect, appreciation, and wonder for the unfinished handiwork of women now long gone whose memories are evoked in the materials and the work they left behind. Knitted scraps, torn lace, quilt fragments, dismembered doll parts, tin treasures, common everyday artifacts are not abandoned, but become the source for the making of striking new artistic work. Cooper’s dress sculptures are assemblages in the rich historical tradition of textiles as craft-art; they can be found in the book Contemporary Textiles: The Fabric of Fine Art.
